Gua Sha: is an ancient oriental instrument-assisted soft tissue technique. which is used to help break up adhesions. Many of the Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) techniques in the industry (PT, MT, ST) were modeled after this. "Instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization is a skilled intervention that includes the use of specialized tools to manipulate the skin, myofascia, muscles, and tendons by various direct compressive stroke techniques". Of all the IASTM modalities, therapeutic massage, and Gua sha are the only ones that have existing best practice and safety guidelines. (Int J Sports Phys Ther. 2019 Jul; 14(4): 670–682) Gua sha can be used to help break up myofascial adhesions and scar tissue as well as enhance the beauty of the skin and appearance of firming the underlying issues. Breaking up the adhesions and scar tissue helps to reduce pain, improve range of motion, increase strength and the reported function of clients.
